ORIGIN OF DOD/DODD FAMILY

The name DOD is an abbreviation of Roderick. The name is found in the west of England on the border of Wales. The Dods are traceble to the reign of Henry II in the 12th century, a distinguished family with an armorial bearing. Sir Samuel Dodd was “Lord Chief Baron of His Majesty’s Court of Exchequer” about 1722.

THOMAS DOD
Generation 1

THOMAS DOD was born about 1589 at Birdbrook, Suffolk, England. He died there on 19 September 1649 and was buried on the 20th at the Birdbrook Churchyard, in Suffolk, England.

His wife was KATHERINE, about whom, as usual, we know little to nothing.

CHILDREN OF THOMAS & KATHERINE DOD

  1. DANIEL DOD SR., born on 15 October 1615 in Birdbrook, Suffolk, England. He mar. Mary Wheeler.

  2. Thomas.

  3. Stephen.

  4. Samuel.

  5. Susanna.

DANIEL DOD SR.
Generation 2

DANIEL DOD SR. was born 15 October 1615, in England – no doubt at Birdbrook, in Suffolk, and first appeared at Branford, Connecticut, between 1644 and 1646. He settled there in 1649.

His marriage was before 1646, to MARY WHEELER, of Wixoe, Suffolk County, England. There is some question regarding her surname. She was born about 1629.

Click on the link to view a Google map showing Wixoe, in Suffolk. Birdbrook is a much smaller village just south of Wixoe. This area is NE of London, at the center of a triangle between Cambridge, Colchester, and Braintree, England.

Mary died on May 26th, 1657 in Branford, Connecticut, and is buried there.

Whole groups of people moved from one place to another, and this was the case with a group from Branford, Connecticut, who moved as a group, to Newark, New Jersey. By 1667 the brothers Daniel Jr., Ebenezer, and Samuel Dod all were listed as inhabitants at Newark. It was probably in this generation, or Daniel Sr.’s, that the spelling changed to Dodd

Daniel Sr. died in January 1665/66 at Branford, Connecticut.
